Something is missing

Something was missing.  I went to the basement in our house.  (It’s an old house with stone walls in the basement. Very Dungeonesk)  When I flipped on the light nothing happened.  It was still dark. “Who didn’t change the light-bulb!” I yelled to myself.  Nobody was home so I figured I was safe to rant and rave.  After stubbing my toes and fighting off the fear that always comes from dark spaces, I found my way to the shelf where the light-bulbs are and quickly resolved the issue.

Darkness does strange things to our psyche.  When it’s dark you can imagine all kinds of things lurking beyond your sight, every bump and noise takes on an ominous threat of impending danger.  When you are watching a horror film, what always happens before the big scare?  The lights go out.  Darkness is a good cloak for evil deeds.

The question I have been pondering in the last week is does darkness exist?  Is it a tangible thing or is darkness just an absence of light.   Think about it.

In the same line of thought, does evil exist or is it simply an absence of good.  Most people (not all for certain) but most who are “evil” have experienced a life void of good.  Maybe its from abject poverty, or a broken home, abuse, etc.  Absence of light, lack of the good things that make life worth living and the resulting effect is “evil”.

Think of all of the places where a light was turned on.  A poor family who receives the light of a hand up from a community minded church, a child from a broken home who received the light of love from a “Big Brother or Big Sister”, a blighted urban community that is turned around because someone bought a piece of run down property and transformed it into a showplace that lit the way for urban renewal.

What are you doing to turn on a light in your sphere of influence.  I believe it was Ben Franklin who said “The only thing necessary for evil to prevail is for good men (an women) to do nothing.”

Something’s missing in this world.  Let’s work together to turn on a light!

Matthew 5:16

In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

  1. Very cool site, you’ve joined the blogasphere!
I used to think if I hummed a song or whistled in the dark I felt safer for some reason.
A black hole has such a high gravitational force that light can not escape from it.
