More In Common Than You Think…

Today we had an interesting lunch meeting with the staff at our church. We went to Jimmie John’s (I recommend the Billy Club!), got our lunch to go and went to the park together.  It was a gorgeous day.  Pastor Henning and Judy had come up with some questions for us each to answer.  It was a way for us to share something about ourselves that the others might not know.  Things like “Where were you born?” , “How many siblings do you have?”, “What was your first job?”, “What were your childhood hobbies?”, and the toughest question of all, “What were your biggest challenges growing up?”

That last question elicited some interesting responses and emotions.  It’s amazing how things from our childhood can effect us even as adults.  It was really interesting to realize how much we don’t know about each other.  All of us have much more in common than you can imagine.  But I really think that is true for all of humanity.  If we could see the challenges that the addict, the loser, the princess, etc. all have had in life we will find common ground.  It makes you appreciate others and the fact that we are all created equally in God’s image and that there is no temptation or trial that is not common to man.  So the next time you encounter someone that is different, remember that you have much more in common than you could imagine.  It puts them into a different light as a child of God, and a fellow traveler on life’s journey.

1 Corinthians 10:13 (Message)

No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he’ll never let you be pushed past your limit; he’ll always be there to help you come through it.
